LILLERUDSGYMNASIET, Lillerud (near Karlstad), Sweden
- Our school
Lillerudsgymnasiet is a leading Swedish boarding school for the study of natural resource management with specialisations in agriculture, equine studies, animal care and natural science. Beautifully located in the municipality of Karlstad, Lillerudsgymnasiet is a private educational institution founded in 1892. Today there are 220 students attending the school, two thirds of which live on campus.
Lillerudsgymnasiet manages its own farm which includes dairy cows, a piggery, as well as sheep and crop production. For students specializing in equine studies, Lillerudsgymnasiet offers a modern equestrian facility with two riding arenas and four fully-equipped stables, three of which accommodate students’ private horses. For trot trainers Lillerudsgymnasiet runs a stable at Färjestadstravet in Karlstad, one of Sweden’s major professional race tracks. Students in animal care benefit from Lillerudsgymnasiet’s new animal house, which houses rabbits, rodents, birds, fishes and reptiles as well as a veterinary clinic.
- Entrepreneurship at our school:
At Lillerudsgymnasiet, we believe that Entrepreneurship is very important for both our education and for our society as a whole. At Lillerudsgymnasiet it is compulsory during our three-year educational programme to take at least one course in Entrepreneurship in accordance with the Junior Achievement Company programme. Half of the school’s students runs mini companies twice during their education. That means that about 100 students every year run mini companies.
The school has been working in an organized and structured manner with UF (JA) Värmland during the last seven years. There are primarily three teachers who handle the Entrepreneurship courses, but all teachers and instructors at the school are in some way involved in the work by communicating contact networks to businesses, business development and coaching.
The entrepreneurial spirit permeates the entire school, as the management of the school provides space for creating the right conditions for both teachers and students. Interdisciplinary working methods is something that the school believes is important to give our students more time and space to grow and work with their mini companies. It has been clearly noted that the students’ motivation increases when applying tasks in a true context – their own businesses! Lillerudsgymnasiet is also a school with a environmental profile. It has been decided that the students’ business ideas in the mini-companies should be linked to sustainable business, locally produced products and operate in the green sector. We believe that it makes the students even more prepared to enter the labor market.
The school’s working methods and successful experience of lifting and coaching students have been highlighted by local and national media. Lillerudsgymnasiet is the vocational school with the highest number of JA students in Sweden, and the only school in Värmland, in which it is obligatory for all students to run Junior Achivement’s Company programme during their education.
